Understand Your Art
The Theoretical Element is one of the Five Martial Elements.
The function of the Theoretical Element is to develop understanding.
A sound Theoretical Element provides the logic and reasoning that underpins, reinforces and backs-up the whole system. It is the thinking upon which the entire discipline of Federation Wing Tsun Kung-Fu is built. This means you understand why everything is the way it is, why it’s good to do certain things, and why things happen the way they do.
Inside The Theoretical Element
Just like the other martial elements, the Theoretical Element is made up of four components, which are as follows:
- Philosophy
- Doctrine
- Concepts
- Principles
Together, these four components provide a framework explaining exactly why all things are done in a particular way, at different levels of detail. These are shown and briefly explained in the diagram below.
Connections To The Theoretical Element
Just like the other martial elements, the Theoretical Element is fully connected via the Creative Relationships and the Control Relationships that exist within the system. Thus, the strengths & weakness within this element will colour and influence the others.
The four relationship pairs formed by these connections are:
- Theory creates Technical
- Theory controls Practical
- Theory is created by Strategy
- Theory is controlled by Physical
Follow the links on this page to go deeper into the components of the Theoretical Element, and discover the effects it has upon all the other martial elements.
