Rock / Scissors / Paper

The 10th Student Grade (abbreviated to 10SG) is the first of three grades which together make up the Advanced Stage of the FWTS Training Programme.

The purpose of the 10SG programme is to introduce the fourth layer of skills & knowledge. By now you’re quite skilled with the system, and have several years of experience behind you. You understand movement, can make strategic combat choices, and also possess a good degree of technical ability. Now it’s time to increase the speed and add greater power & intention to all your techniques, which will start to sharpen and refine everything you think you know. 🙂

Regarding speed; any GCSE student of Physics knows that speed, distance and time are all related (as in the equation v=d/t) – so, increase the speed of any strike, and it will take less time to travel an equivalent distance.

Power is not how strong you are, but rather how quickly you can exert your strength, so power will naturally rise due to increased speed. It’s all simple enough, but at 10SG and above you’ll be increasing the speed & power of everything you do.

Intention, on the other hand, is something like commitment to an action, and it is this state which puts an opponent under pressure. It’s hard to explain, but anyone who’s felt the intention of a committed opponent knows exactly how it feels.

In practical terms this all means that your reaction time, your range awareness, your positions, and your overall awareness will all have to shift up a gear to remain combat effective. Don’t blink!

Put all these things together, and you’ll discover why a new set of strategies and tactics are required. It’s also why no one strategy is the best. Like the Chinese hand games known as Sansukumi-Ken – any strategy is only the best under certain circumstances.
